The Mohs’ hardness is 7,5 to 8.
Mainly the rough stones are found in hexagonal crystals, due to the crystal system.
Aquamarine means water of the sea in Latin, it is so named because of its beautiful sea water color.
The most desired color is an intensive blue as find in the Santa Maria mine in Brazil and the so called
Santa Maria Africana quality, coming from Mozambique. Santa Maria became a trade term indicating fine color of Aquamarine.
The largest Aquamarine of gemstone quality was found in 1910 in Marambaya, Minas Gerais (Brazil). It weighed 110,5 kg ,and was cut into many stones with a total weight of over 100.000 ct.
